Our story

Kallari Kawsay is run by a Kichwa family – Wilson, Janet and their children – along with extended family who also work at the cabanas, helping with construction and training in the kitchen. Wilson has experience working in international tourism and is also a chef. Janet studied nursing. All now live at Kallari Kawsay on the family land in the Kichwa community of Sani Isla in Ecuador.

The designs and ideas for the place came from Wilson and every time we build something new he looks for another inventive way to create it using natural materials.

Every time you visit Kallari Kawsay you will see there has been some kind of evolution. It is growing with new ideas and constructions, the latest being a circular relaxation space with a crow’s nest area at the top. Wilson is currently experimenting with the idea of making bamboo roof tiles as a way to avoid cutting down leaves. The bamboo here is known locally as Wahdua and grows fast and is plentiful.
